The raised-edge pond construction technique makes building a water garden very efficient.  It involves less digging and uses less stone than traditional methods.   It also results in a natural looking pond edge, eliminating the ring-of-rock look that is found in many ponds.

These slide shows  are of home-owner built ponds that we consulted on (with the exception of the first).  Each presents a different set of details and circumstances.

This article in HandyMan How-To was published in May, 2000.  It provides an excellent overview of the raised-edge technique using Rock-on-a-Roll.  We suggest you read this article first, then move on to the home-owner built projects below.

John and Cordelia started the summer with a flat, dull south Minneapolis lot.  They ended it with a charming backyard oasis filled with fish and plants.  We helped them design their project, understand the technical details and provided the materials.  John and Cordelia did all the work with assistance from us on the waterfalls.

This slide show follows John and Cordelia from the very beginning.

Bob was looking for an interesting summer project when a friend suggested he consider building a water garden.  After talking through the process with us, he decided to dig in.   He ended up with a long beautiful stream running down the hillside into a large lower pond.  We helped Bob with design, materials and a little encouragement.  The rest was all Bob.

These slides show in detail how he sculpted the stream and pond.

Yvonne's brand new suburban backyard lacked the soul that she craved.  After speaking with a coworker last summer, she contacted us.  We helped her scheme her way to a stream and pond that she can watch and listen to every morning as she has her coffee. We did the design and most of the construction, leaving the finishing work to Yvonne.

Here you will see construction details about laying in the stone for the pond and stream.
